Tell me about a difficult team situation you were in?
Content Notes
Key information to help you build confidence in this topic.
Difficult team situations are inevitable — in life generally, and certainly throughout a dental career, where you’ll work closely with colleagues, nurses, hygienists, and other professionals every day. This question is testing whether you can navigate conflict or difficulty within a team calmly and constructively, in a way that ultimately supports the team’s shared goal rather than escalating tension.
Describing the situation
Your answer should clearly outline a genuine challenge you faced while working as part of a team. Keep the explanation structured and concise — give the interviewer enough context to understand the problem, without getting lost in unnecessary detail. It should be clear from how you describe it that you approached the situation calmly, professionally, and respectfully, even if it was frustrating at the time.
Skills to highlight throughout your answer
A strong answer naturally demonstrates several key skills, rather than just listing them:
- Communication — how you raised or addressed the issue.
- Empathy — showing you considered the other person’s perspective, not just your own frustration.
- Active listening — understanding the issue fully before responding or acting.
- Problem-solving — working toward a genuine resolution, not just identifying the problem.
- Collaboration — resolving the challenge together as a team, rather than assigning blame to one individual.
Reflection and learning
Explain what the outcome was, and be clear about the specific role you played in reaching that outcome — this should be about your own actions and contribution, not just a general description of events. Reflect honestly on what you learned from the experience, and how it has shaped your approach to teamwork since. It’s also valuable to acknowledge what you might do differently if faced with a similar situation again — this shows genuine self-awareness rather than a story with a perfectly neat ending.
Relevance to dentistry
Make sure to explicitly connect your example back to dentistry. Handling conflict professionally is essential for maintaining effective teamwork, patient safety, and high standards of care — a dental team that can’t resolve internal friction constructively risks that tension affecting patient care, communication, or efficiency.
Suggested structure for this question
- Briefly describe the situation — for example, a team member not contributing their share of work on a group project.
- Explain how you approached the issue, showing communication, empathy, and active listening — for instance, speaking to the individual privately and calmly to understand their perspective before addressing your concerns.
- Describe the outcome, and your specific role in achieving it.
- Reflect on what you’d do differently if the situation didn’t resolve as hoped — for example, escalating to a supervisor if informal conversation didn’t work.
- Link the experience clearly to dentistry, explaining why professional conflict resolution matters for teamwork, patient safety, and quality of care within a dental team.
